Project Billing Types

Categorise projects by how they're billed, then use that category to filter your portfolio and the Ready for Billing queue.

🎥 Video Tutorial

A short walkthrough of assigning a Billing Type, filtering by it, and customising the available values.

Overview

Every project can carry an optional Billing Type so you can categorise your portfolio and quickly filter workloads. Out of the box the field offers two values - Manual and Automatic - but you can rename these, add more, or remove them (see Customising the Values).

A common use is to tag projects billed via Recurring Bills as Automatic, so you can filter them out of the manual billing queue.

Assigning a Billing Type

The field lives in the Billing subsection at the end of the Edit Project page.

  1. Open the project and scroll to the Billing section.
  2. Choose a Billing Type (for example, Automatic for recurring-bill projects).
  3. Save Changes.

The billing type is displayed on the project cards on both the Projects summary page and the project dashboard.

Filtering by Billing Type

Because billing type is a categorisation, you can use it to filter:

  • Projects page - use the All Billing Types filter to show only projects of a chosen type.
  • Ready for Billing queue - filter out, say, Automatic projects so the queue shows only the work you bill manually.

Administrator Settings

Making the field mandatory

By default the system allows an empty value, so a billing type is optional. To enforce a billing type on every project:

  1. Go to Settings ➔ Configuration ➔ Projects (the General section).
  2. In the Billing Type section, disable Allow empty value and select a default value.
  3. Save.

When you save, all existing projects without a type are assigned the default (projects that already have a type keep it), and new projects require a billing type going forward.

Bulk-applying billing types

Want to apply billing types in batch to your existing projects rather than the default? Contact [email protected] and the team can handle the data migration for you.

Customising the values

To rename, add, or remove the billing-type options:

  1. Go to Settings ➔ Configuration ➔ Projects.
  2. At the top, open the Project Profile Settings and edit the fields for the General tab (View / Edit Fields).
  3. Expand the Billing subsection and open the Billing Type field.
  4. Edit the values - for example, Bill in Arrears, Bill in Advance - alongside the usual field options (label, size, and so on). Add as many values as you need.
  5. Save.

Your updated values are then available when you set the billing type on a project.
